How Do You Respond To Setbacks?

Everyone has problems, setbacks and challenges. How you respond to them will determine your level of success.

I used to turn my back and run from every setback that happened in my life. I would avoid confrontation like the plague. I simply wanted to live a life without conflict.

While this conflict free life seems great in theory, we all know that life in the real world just doesn’t work that way. Which I found out quickly as I grew older and started my own business.

I learned that businesses thrive because of problems and challenges. These things only kill your business when you ignore them.

Your response to a problem, challenge or setback is the difference between bankruptcy or success.

In my previous business, I responded negatively to things that were out of my control and did not take massive action on the things that I could control.

I sold dictation products that were being made obsolete by new technology such as voice recognition. I saw this coming for a number of years but I kept turning my back on the problem hoping that it would somehow go away.

Looking back at this now, I can see how crazy this thought process was. It was like hoping for a desert snowstorm in July. That will happen right about the time pigs learn how to fly and politicians quit fighting.

I could not stop technology from making my products obsolete, so ignoring this fact and responding to it negatively was getting me nowhere.

I should’ve accepted this setback head-on. I needed to respond positively to the things that were out of my control. Feeling sorry for myself was getting me nowhere.

“Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” Winston Churchill

There are many things in life that you have no control over, so bitching and moaning about them is a futile endeavor.

The best thing to do is to accept that there are some things in life that are uncontrollable. Don’t stew over these things or feel sorry for yourself. Just acknowledge that they exist and then let them go.

If you can’t change them anyways, why should you be wasting your precious time thinking about them?

The next step is to put all of your energy into what you can control.

Instead of trying to empty a sinking ship with a thimble, I should have taken massive focused action on what I could influence.

I had the idea for this blog many years ago, but instead of concentrating my efforts on it, I kept wasting time, effort and money on my failing dictation equipment business.

Don’t make the same mistakes that I did. Face your problems and challenges directly. You run the show, you pull the strings.

Grab hold of the reins and jump into the saddle. Take massive action on what you can control and forget about the rest.
